Fiber cement siding, handled the way its weight and dust actually demand.
Fiber cement is a heavier, harder, and more particular material to work with than vinyl, and it rewards a crew that treats it that way. Correct fastening into framing, cutting methods that keep silica dust down, and knowing which cut edges need field paint before the wall closes back up are what decide whether a fiber cement job looks right in year one and still looks right in year twenty.
Why fiber cement handles differently than vinyl
Fiber cement is made from cement, sand and cellulose fiber pressed and cured into a hard, dense board, and it carries weight to match. A typical fiber cement lap board runs around 2.3 pounds per square foot of coverage, which works out to roughly 230 pounds for a 100-square-foot square, noticeably more than a comparable run of vinyl siding. That is not a problem for a house's structure. Homes are built to carry far more than a layer of cladding. It is a problem for the crew, because it changes how the material has to be staged, carried and fastened.
Boards get hand-carried in pairs rather than solo on anything but the shortest pieces, staging on scaffolding or ladders is planned around not overloading a single point, and fasteners go into the framing or nailable sheathing rather than relying on the panel to hold its own weight between studs the way vinyl can. Corrosion-resistant nails, driven flush but not overdriven (a fastener sunk too deep crushes the board's edge and creates a weak point), are what actually keep a heavy board from working loose over the years.
Cutting it safely, not just cutting it fast
Fiber cement contains crystalline silica, and cutting it dry with a standard blade throws fine dust into the air that is genuinely bad to breathe repeatedly over a career. OSHA's respirable crystalline silica standard for construction, 29 CFR 1926.1153, requires a written exposure control plan for any crew doing this work regularly, and it lays out specific control methods for saws used on fiber cement board.
In practice that means we cut with a saw fitted with a blade made for the material and equipped with vacuum dust collection whenever a power saw is the right tool, or we use manual or pneumatic shears and the score-and-snap method, which throw far less dust to begin with. Dry sweeping cut dust afterward is exactly the wrong move. Wet suppression or a vacuum is what actually clears it instead of just putting it back in the air. None of this changes how the finished wall looks. It changes what the crew installing it breathes for the next twenty years, which is worth doing right regardless of who is watching.
Factory finish vs. a field-painted board
Fiber cement comes two ways: pre-finished with a factory-applied coating cured under controlled conditions, or primed only, meant to be painted on site after installation. The factory-applied option generally holds its color and film integrity longer than a field-applied coat, since it is cured in a way a paintbrush and Indiana weather cannot replicate, and many factory finishes carry their own manufacturer coating warranty as a matter of industry practice.
Whichever route a house takes, cut edges always need attention. A saw or shear exposes raw, unfinished material at every end cut, and that edge needs field-applied touch-up paint or sealant before the wall is considered finished, factory finish or not. It is a small step that gets skipped on rushed jobs and shows up a few years later as a discolored line at every board end. On cost versus longevity: fiber cement runs higher than vinyl in both material and labor, largely because of the weight and the cutting precautions above. What that cost buys is a board that does not crack from cold the way brittle old PVC can, holds paint far longer than wood, and is non-combustible, which some insurers take into account. It is a longer-term bet, and a fair one, but it is not the cheapest way to reside a wall on the day of installation.
How a fiber cement job runs at your house
- Free inspection. We assess the existing wall, note whether old siding needs tear-off first, and confirm the framing can take fasteners at the spacing this material needs.
- Written scope. Format, texture, factory or field finish, and trim details named as line items.
- Delivery and staging. Pallets are heavy. We plan where they land and how boards move to the wall without over-handling them.
- Tear-off and house wrap, if needed. Old siding removed, sheathing checked, new water-resistive barrier installed before any board goes up.
- Cutting and installation. Dust-controlled cutting on site, corrosion-resistant fasteners driven into framing at the manufacturer's spacing, gaps left at butt joints for the board's own slight movement.
- Caulk and touch-up. Joints sealed, cut edges primed or painted to match before the job is called finished.
- Cleanup and walk-through. Wet cleanup of any cutting debris, haul-off, and a walk around the house with you.
Warranty: what's covered on a siding job
We don't carry a separate workmanship warranty specific to siding installation. What we do have confirmed: a 2-year workmanship warranty on interior and exterior paint, a 2-year workmanship warranty on gutter and gutter guard installation, and a 5-year workmanship warranty on roofs.
